How it works
Sri Lanka's oldest surviving brewery, at Nuwara Eliya in the hills. Samuel Baker brewed there in 1849; commercial brewing began in 1881 with the Ceylon Brewery Company of Auguste de Bavay and the planter Mountsteven Bremer. The Murree Brewery of India took it over in 1884, a consortium led by Lindsay White in 1893; it became The Ceylon Brewery Ltd. in 1910 and a Carson Cumberbatch subsidiary in 1993. In 1996 the beer passed to the Lion Brewery (Ceylon) Ltd.; the Nuwara Eliya plant stopped in 2001 after the Biyagama brewery opened. unverified info
