## About

Founded in Halifax, West Yorkshire, in 1838 by Samuel Webster (the Brewery History Society dates the site to about 1820); Samuel Webster & Sons Ltd was formed in 1890. Watney Mann bought it in March 1972 with 288 pubs and made Green Label and Yorkshire Bitter national brands. The Halifax brewery closed in 1996 with the loss of about 400 jobs; Webster's beers were brewed at John Smith's, then at Burtonwood from 2004. Silvan Brands has owned the brand since 2003.
